Today I have an extra post to highlight the current challenge at
CAS Mix Up. It is a stencil challenge this month and I had an extra idea so it means I had an extra card to share. This idea actually comes from following the lovely Gundi over at
Papierelle. She sometimes uses graphite pencil on her cards and I usually think it looks really cool and have wanted to give it a go for a while.
As the prompt this month is tone on tone, I took a piece of grey paper and a stencil by Funky Fossil and coloured it with a pencil. I actually quite liked the result.
I was going to stamp and heat emboss the sentiment directly onto the panel but chickened out as I thought I would mess it up, so I stamped on vellum instead. For the insert I used a piece of paper that is dark grey on one side and white on the other and used a white pencil with the stencil.
I did spray some fixative on the finished piece so that it wouldn't smudge. I am quite pleased with the result but I am unsure whether it would have been just as good if I had used a grey ink.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog today, I really appreciate it.

I think this is such a cool card Hilary! What a great idea to use graphite pencils over the grey background (and you already know I love this stencil!) A fab card. x
What a great choice of colour Hilary and I think the vellum strip sentiment compliments very well.

It looks fantastic with the graphite pencil and I don't think it would be better with ink! Love the sentiment on the vellum! Good choice, Hilary!
It's a great card! And the sentimnet on vellum is always beautiful. I will take a look at the challenge..who knows I'll find some time this afternoon..
Wow Hillary, so beautiful using pencil as your colouring medium.
Looks great and I love the texture, Jo x
What a stunning effect Hilary. I bet you got lots out of doing the pencil colouring though, instead of using a grey ink? A unique and eye catching card x.
Great card and use of the stencil. x
Hilary, I've been quite open about my obsession with grey - this gorgeous card just does it for me in so many ways! I have never heard of penciling a stencil! Thanks for this beautiful lesson!

I absolutely loved the look of pencil on the card!! Just as you were inspired by Gundi, I am inspired by you!! Definitely added to my list of 'techniques to try'!!
Fabulous card, the graphite looks perfect on the gray!
This looks brilliant and what a great idea with the pencil-love the stencil too

The graphite has a slightly shiny sheen and that's what makes it special. I think the idea is great (I'm happy that I was able to inspire you). And I feel like that often, too, I also think, oh dear, if I destroy everything now. Embossing the feeling on vellum is a good solution, it gives the card an additional highlight.
Wow--so beautiful, Hilary! I'm going to CASE this one using a pretty metallic grayish ink I have! Thanks for the inspiration!
Love your grey tones with your black framing, Hilary. I love how you colored your stenciled image with a graphite pencil. A wonderful way to control your coloring. I really like your stamped sentiment on your vellum too. TFS my friend. Hugs..Nancy
This card is beautiful Hilary! I love your pencil stenciling to create the tone-on-tone effect. The vellum sentiment banner is just perfect to let the design of the stencil show through. I have not tried graphite pencils ... another thing to add to my ever growing things to try! :) xx
Beautiful monochrome card!
This is a real ZEN card, I love the movement in this tone on tone beauty. Keeping it simple was truly worth it. Thanks for sharing with us xx
The pencil stencilling looks brilliant against the grey card Hilary and love the silver embossed sentiment on vellum and love the rounded corners. I must try this graphite stencilling as it looks so elegant and not something I have done before. x
WOW! This looks beautiful, what a great job on the colouring .... love it!
