September CAS Mix Up

It is the first of the month so time for a new challenge at CAS Mix Up. I do hope you will be able to join us. This month we are using stencils and I am honoured to be our host. I want to see you use gesso with your stencils.

I chose to use gesso really because I wanted to learn to use it more myself and so I have learnt that you can get some really stunning effects. I have also learnt that if you want to use it with stencils it is best to buy the thick or heavy gesso as it is easier to manage and doesn't leak under the stencil so easily.  If you pop over to the challenge blog you will find a number of links to different videos to help inspire you.

Our guest designer this month is the lovely Sue from Cards by Q. I hope you get a chance to pay her a visit.

I started this card by embossing my stencil onto a piece of card, this helped give some dimension and also helped with positioning the stencil to add the gesso. I actually really like the effect of the gesso through the stencil, it gives a really nice base for adding ink. The other really nice thing is that you can lift the ink off the gesso areas with a damp cloth if you want to create different effects. I used a cloth to lift off some of the yellow green and then added a little dark green to the leaf centres.

I cut the oval frame several times and stacked them and then added my image. The sentiment was stamped in the same dark ink and I added 2 little eyelets so I could attach my ribbon.

I am sure most of you have got a pot of gesso somewhere in your stash so why not get it out, find your favourite stencil and have a play with us this month. I guarantee you will be pleased that you did.

You have until 24th to join us and don't forget to visit the blog to get more inspiration and some links to technique videos to help. As I am hosting this one I shall be visiting every entry and am looking forward to getting some new ideas for using my gesso.

I am looking forward to seeing you in the gallery.

Now. Back to your card! I DO have a tube of gesso around here somewhere, and you have really made such a gorgeous card using it I will promptly start looking for it immediately! LOvely stencil, gorgeous colors, fabulous oval die, and the prettiest scalloped panel! ALL tied up with a bow and a sweet hello - perfection, my friend!

Oh my Hilary, this is gorgeous. Loving the yellow with the blue green centers. I love that you described the technique so well too. Not sure I have any gesso around...but I may take a hunt for it. Love that frame, layering it up really makes a statement. This is in my top 5 for you.

Fabulous card for your CAS Mix-up hosting gig, Hilary! I have yet to make it over there to play - maybe this'll be the month. If I can find my gesso...

Anyway, love your flowers in that gorgeous oval frame!!

Wow Hilary, you really nailed this card!! Absolutely delightful and just perfect! Love so much the idea of embossing the stencil before adding gesso, such clever technique! And also the bi-colour flowers look really great inside the sweet layered frame! The eyelets and the matching ribbon to hold the sentiment are fabulous details for adding interest to the whole design!
Hugs, have a lovely rest of the week!

Utterly gorgeous and with a sweet feminine look to it. The stenciled gesso gives wonderful texture, and your shading of the colors gives even more depth. Good tip about using the thicker gesso which I'll keep in mind if I ever decide to buy some. I've considered it because I like what I've seen. Now I'm learning even more and seeing a whole new look. Great challenge, Hilary!

Aaahhh...such a Sweet and beautiful Gesso Stenciled CAS card design, Hilary. TFS your detailed description. I LOVE your Gesso stenciling, die cut pretty frame and card base border. So fun to see your green eyelets to attach your narrow satin green ribbon. Every detail on your CAS card is perfect, my friend. I am LOVING your Gesso Challenge and so happy you chose this technique. I did learn from Eileen's video that using a very thin layer of Gesso prevents any leaking and gives a nice thin smooth stenciled image. TFS your beauty and hosting this wonderful challenge. All the DT and GD cards are so inspiring and gorgeous. Can't wait to see what I dedicated follower design too:-) Love and Hugs...Nancy
